ETH Certificate Requirements

Ethnographic Studies certificate requirements are summarized below. 

  • five courses comprising a sequence of two core courses plus three electives
  •  ethnographic research (at least four weeks, normally continuous)
  •  a writing requirement fulfilled through a senior thesis in the student's department of concentration (thesis topic or discrete chapter) or a separate paper that addresses the student’s ethnographic research in some explicit way

The Ethnographic Studies certificate program provides advising on an ongoing basis, including summer advising support for students conducting ethnographic fieldwork. Before beginning their fieldwork, students will demonstrate proficiency in the relevant field or contact language and acquire Institutional Research Board (IRB) approval for research projects involving human subjects, if applicable.
