Incorporation: Innovation and Contradiction in Indigenous Australian Pharmacogenomics
Anthropology Graduate Student Noah Collins', G3, presentation focused on the theoretical and methodological premises surrounding conducting biomedical genomic research with Indigenous communities across Australia. Collins' fieldwork centers theoretical frames of colonial ownership, phenotype and Indigineity, extraction, and alternative approaches to sovereignty.
Collins plans to follow and collaborate on several Indigenous genomics research projects being conducted by the only Indigenous scientists in the country. With potentially billions of dollars to be made, Indigenous communities and researchers are taking risks in creating corporations and partnerships. Limited options force decisions and have heavy implications for methodology, culture, and science. Noah plans to utilizes critical Indigenous theory and his experience within population genetics to inform the fieldwork process.
