On April 24, 2024, the students from the Anthropology course Just Housing? Racial Capitalism and the Right to the City taught by lecturer Jacob Geuder, presented findings from the course’s community engaged research. Just Housing? was developed in conjunction with April de Simone, Director of the Practice of Democracy and supported by the Program for Community-Engaged Scholarship (ProCES).
Throughout the spring term, students from various disciplinary backgrounds learned what home belonging and city making means to local communities as well as what obstacles hinder progress toward providing more secure and sustainable homes for everyone in Trenton. Students presented excerpts from their video interviews, followed by a rich discussion with the dozens of community members present.
“We don’t want to be a part of the problem. We want to be a part of the solution” expressed Pastor Kelvin Baldwin. This sentiment resonated deeply, echoing the shared vision to extend the project beyond this semester and establish a sustained collaboration between Princeton's Anthropology Department and initiatives for Housing Justice in Trenton.
