During summer 2023, 14 students worked with faculty and community experts through the Derian program. The Heirloom Gardens Oral History Project is a collaboration of Princeton University, Spelman College, and the Ujamaa Cooperative Farming Alliance to collect oral histories of people who have worked to preserve Black and Indigenous seed and foodways through the Southeastern United States and Appalachia. Nathalie Charles ‘25, David Smith ‘24, Justin Zhang ‘24 collected more than 30 oral history interviews with people working to preserve Black and Indigenous seed and foodways this summer.
