Purpose, a Pulitzer Prize-winning family drama by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins ’06, won the 2025 Tony Award for Best New Play. Jacobs-Jenkins, who was awarded the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play for Appropriate just last year, has become the first Black playwright to win the Tony for Best Play since August Wilson, who won the award in 1987 for Fences. To date, the play has been distinguished by two triumphs, with Kara Young being honored with the distinction of Best Featured Actress in a Play. This accolade serves to reinforce the status of Jacobs-Jenkins as one of America's most creative and accomplished playwrights.
Warm congratulations, Branden!
