The Department kicked off the new academic year on September 8 with a festive gathering organized by our chair João Biehl and Adriana Petryna at their home in Princeton. In his welcome remarks, Biehl greeted the faculty, staff and returning graduate students and welcomed the first-year graduate students and new postdoctoral fellows, as well as the visiting scholars, the new department administrator and the new undergraduate administrator. Biehl quoted a poem by Audre Lord to highlight the power of "today." He also referred to novelist Clarice Lispector's statement that "Everything in the world began with a yes" and thanked the many "yeses" that make up our vibrant anthropological community.
