Pyre, Aniruddhan Vasudevan's English translation of celebrated Tamil author Perumal Murugan's novel Pookuzhi, has been longlisted for the International Book Prize 2023. Pyre (Grove Atlantic, US & Pushkin Press, UK) is a novel about intercaste love and the violence it faces. Saroja and Kumaresan are in love and they have married quickly before arriving in Kumaresan's village. But they are harboring a secret. Saroja is from a different caste, and if people find out, the newlyweds could be in grave danger. Will their love keep them safe?
