The Sun on My Head: A Book Discussion with Geovani Martins

Event Description

A Brazil LAB Today event with Geovani Martins. Moderated by Pedro Meira Monteiro (Spanish and Portuguese).

Geovani Martins was born in 1991, in Bangu, greater Rio de Janeiro. He has worked as a ‘sandwich-board’ man and a waiter at children’s parties, as well as in a beach bar. In 2013 and 2015 he took part in workshops at the FLUP (The Peripheries Literary Festival). Martins has published some of his short stories in the magazine Setor X and has twice been invited to participate in the Paraty International Literary Festival’s fringe programme. In 2018, he published O Sol na Cabeça (Companhia das Letras), in which he recounts the experiences of boys growing up in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro in the early years of the twenty-first century. Drawing on his childhood and adolescence, in the book Martins uses the rhythms and slang of his neighborhood to capture the texture of life in the slums. The Sun on My Head is being published in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Netherlands, China, and Catalonia.
