Event Description

Princeton’s Nigerian Student Association, Black Student Union, and Ethiopian & Eritrean Student Association invite you to Diaspora in Dialogue: Reimagining Our Engagement with Nigeria & Ethiopia. Diaspora in Dialogue is an event intended to spark dialogue and conversation across the diaspora regarding our contributions to our homelands’ economies, political discourse, academia, and more. Bringing in African Studies scholars Dr.  Amsale Alemu and Dr. Mojubaolu Okome, we hope to create a historical through-line with a global lens regarding the diaspora’s interactions with both their native countries and the Western countries in which they settle.

Our particular choice to focus on Nigeria and Ethiopia’s diasporas is driven by a desire to nuance the detached narratives that are prevalent within our diasporic communities. By reimagining our relationship to our home countries and our unique and active positions in the diaspora, we hope to provide a roadmap for navigating how we can continue to participate in our countries’ progress and the development of the African diaspora. The goal of this event is not to lecture but to have an in-depth yet accessible conversation with scholars who have extensive knowledge about the influence of the diaspora on the stories of Nigeria and Ethiopia.
